Detox and Mint

I wanted to take a moment to discuss the 21-day detox I am doing. It involves giving up coffee and alcohol. Although you can drink Yerba Mate tea, which I have come to love! Did you know this tea has vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in it? Why have I not heard of this before?
It has been 10 days on the detox and I have to say, I am feeling good. I do miss my wine though. I love a glass of Syrah on the porch under the sky on a Friday night!
One of the things you do is drink 32 ounces of water first thing in the morning. Breakfast consists of a vegetable smoothie with some fruits, snacks are nuts or lettuce and avocado, lunch has most of the protein and dinner is veggie- unlimited herbs on anything. I really don’t feel hungry, and I have decent energy. I also take the Miracle Cleanse by BRAGG. Its great in just a shot glass after breakfast.
I thought I would share the recipe for the smoothie, because there is an herb in it that I wouldn’t have thought of using.
Green Smoothie:
·         3 large romaine leaves
·         2 handfuls of baby spinach (I do one kale)
·         ½ avocado
·         ½ peeled lemon
·         ½ granny smith apple
·         ½ frozen green banana
·         1 mint sprig (this makes it amazing)
I also add 2 tbsp. of riced cauliflower, a couple frozen blueberries and a stalk of celery.
I use part water and part unsweetened coconut milk for the liquid, but you can use only water if you choose.
I prep and freeze these with no liquid, this makes it easy to thaw partially on the counter and have a nice cold smoothie in the morning. It also keeps me satiated for hours!

A little about mint:
Mint is a natural stimulant! That’s right smell it, use an essential oil, or eat a leaf. Mint also aids in digestion. Just the smell alone activates your salivary glands which produce digestive enzymes! Explains why mint is used in the culinary arts often.  I for one find a nice cup of mint tea soothing when I have a cold or a stomach ache.

  1. Hi Kellie,
I have to say one thing that I love having as a habit is to drink water. I almost drink water exclusively, and I have done this for many years now. I don't remember when it changed for me, but I am grateful that I have this habit. The times where I usually struggle with drinking water is when I travel and I can always tell when I am dehydrated. I usually drink peppermint tea when I have an upset stomach which my mom taught me. I didn't know that mint is a stimulant though. I can still remember eating mint leaves in my mom's garden when I was growing up in western Washington. Thanks for sharing and bringing back good memories for me :)
