Why Herbs?
The benefits of herbs:
People have practiced natural medicine for
centuries. before modern medicine and technology people relied on good old
fashioned homemade remedies to treat illness or injuries.
My interest in herbal medicine is the intent to
enhance the body’s ability to heal itself. Herbal remedies can boost immunity
to fight off disease and infection. It is cost effective, and you know (if you
grow your herbs yourself) exactly without a doubt what you are putting into
your body!
Some commonly used herbs are:
- Echinacea - often used in tinctures or powders to reduce symptoms of the common cold and flu.
- Garlic - used to reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure, as well as for treating infections. It can be taken fresh, as a powder, as oil or as a juice.
- Ginger - commonly used to reduce nausea, to reduce symptoms of colds and chills through sweating and to boost circulation. It can be taken fresh, dried, or as oil.
- Ginseng - used to boost the immune system and decrease fatigue. It is also used for lungs conditions such as coughs, and to reduce blood pressure. The root is taken as a powder, tincture.
- Lavender - popular as aromatic oil and can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments from exhaustion to headaches, and indigestion to depression. It is commonly taken as an infusion, tincture, mouthwash, cream, lotion, massage oil, chest rub, hair rinse or oil.
- Chamomile - a popular herb used for indigestion, stress relief, anxiety, and insomnia. It can be taken as an infusion, tincture, ointment.
It is important to educate yourself on the correct
way to use any herb, as some are not safe to ingest. If you do decide to take
an herbal supplement, it is important to let your health care provider know, as
many herbs interact with other forms of medicine.
Thanks for posting all this great stuff Kellie. I am going to take a look at this and see if I can benefit from any of it. I am going to be getting on a healthy track here soon as well. I have always thought the natural stuff was very weird but anymore their is really no denying that it does have some benefits to the body. Thanks again Kellie.
ReplyDeleteSean, I used to think the same about any natural remedies or holistic healing. I have found as I get older they often work better than medications. I took Benadryl and Ambien at different times for sleep aide, only to discover years later melatonin and lavender chamomile tea are far better! It is a hard concept to grasp, and as with anything what works for some may not work for others. If I can help in anyway as a resource to something you might want to try , feel free to send me a message. I can say that the folks at natural grocers are really awesome at helping you locate things in the store, and knowledgeable in what works. They do have classes too, I intend to take some this year.
